A Gift for Mom

Remember when I introduced you to my fabulous mother? If not, you can meet her here! As I was browsing Pinterest a few weeks ago I saw this picture...

Immediately I thought I needed to make this for her Mother's day gift. Due to my impulse nature I cut some Amy Butler fabric I had and sewed it together. I then recruited The Mr. to go on a "nature field trip" with me. (It's his type of thing.) We did a little trespassing in a nearby woods. I was busy grabbing the perfect size sticks as The Mr. was hunting for morel mushrooms. I scored immediately but he had no such luck.  We returned and cut the sticks with our piece-of-crap-saw which I ended up throwing in the trash. Here she is...

I sewed it like a pillowcase and then rolled over the ends and sewed.

The next day I sent it in the mail and waited for her response...

She loved it! I imagined her using it to carry in her veggies that her and my little nephew picked together. Too bad I'm not there to help!

Looking Ahead: Party Time

I can't tell you how much fun The Mr. and I had this past weekend! Yes, we were able to finish the mini marathon in 2 hours and 14 minutes. (I love thinking about putting in a movie and then when it would be over is about the same time we ran. Puke!) I'm proud to report our bodies are healed and our spirits are refreshed. We spent quality time with some great friends and ended the brigade with a dinner at Creations Cafe downtown Indy with 10 of our close friends. Despite the ridiculously slow service it was one of those nights you cling on to for a while. We are truly blessed by those around us!

Although last weekend felt like a total party all weekend, we look forward to hosting a special party this coming weekend too.We have 6 out of town weddings, weekend visits to THE Great Winona Lake, and other adventures with family and friends to make this summer quite busy. We thought it would be best to round up the troops for some fun. Wine and Cheese Tasting! Here's my inspiration pictures, thanks to the help of my favorite tool- Pinterest!

More to come on the party, thought you would enjoy some eye candy.
Maybe those who haven't RSVP will now make it happen. :)

(Tonight was the best night I've ever written a blog. Why you ask? The Mr. was playing his acoustic guitar- my favorite! Guess you found out I don't normally write at 6 a.m. I'm not that crazy. Well most of the time.)

In Honor of Mom

I love my mom for a million reasons. How could I not? I'm thankful for her life and her constant support for me through the years. I could go on and on about how cool my mom is because she really is!!!

If it weren't for my mom, this blog would have never appeared nor would I have any clue about how a home fits together. I thought today would be fitting to introduce you to my super mother often referred to as "Martha" herself....
 The queen of good cooking...

The biggest example of sacrifice and of giving quality time...

Someone I just couldn't live with out!
Thanks mom for your encouragement and support!

On another note, I'm so thankful for my mother-in-law as well! I couldn't have asked for someone greater!

Lots of love to you both! Happy Mother's Day!

Another Goodwill Find

Happy Friday to YOU!

We at the Ahern Household have quite the weekend! Lots of friends in town and we're running the largest mini marathon in the country, the Indianapolis OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini Marathon on Saturday. I finally got over being mad at The. Mr. for signing me up to run this year (Yes, I beat him big time last year!). Am I ready? Nah, but I know the adrenaline with kick in tonight. We're stoked to spend lots of time with friends who are also coming into town for the race.
Adrenaline already kicked in thanks to this!

Last night I got some extra energy after working late and I stopped at Goodwill.

I scored BIG TIME!

I was about doing flips (if only I knew how) when I walked out. I was paying for some small dishes when I saw some workers bring out some dining room chairs that were in great condition. I ran over and inspected them. They were $5.99. Score! Within 3 minutes (well after waiting 6 minutes in line- you gotta have patience when your paying at Goodwill) I had bought them. Then the manager said that they had two chairs with arms. I was on it! I went back and paid the difference. Final total for both chairs was 18 bones! (I may have celebrated a little.)

What do you think of my find...

(Sorry for the shadows, that's what happens when you work full time and have to take pics at night.)

Obviously I'm not leaving it staged this way. I just wanted The Mr. to be impressed by them when he got home.

Now the dilemma....I need your input....What should I do to them? Paint white, leave them brown, or paint a fun color. I'm pretty sure I'm going to recover the cushions. Please make my day by sharing your thoughts!!!

Ikea Hacks

We love IKEA  beacuse it's cheap and has decent quality items. Not everything there has the wow factor though. Throughout the last two months I’ve learned about the term, “Ikea hacks”. Ikea hacks are awesome! People take plain old IKEA pieces and put them to a new use or just spice them up. Here is some inspiration for you. Go hack away!

A Gotta Get: Egg Ring

There are some objects that I am a total believer in. When it comes to the house, I can’t help but share. Check out today’s “Gotta Get”.

“Gotta Get” Stats:

What: Egg Ring

Location: Crate and Barrel

Price: $3.95

Size: Small but perfect for your kitchen drawers.

Purpose: Makes the perfect egg sandwich!

Why’s it so hotttt….Nothing beats perfection.

The Mr. and I use our 2 egg rings all the time. If it’s Saturday or Sunday, we’re usually using them. Tie them onto a wedding gift or give them as a little token of gratitude. They’re worth it!

This egg wasn't perfect but that's what you get when you're in a rush. Go figure!

Hanging Pretty

You know I was having a hard time finding the right accent colors to match my new lovely duvet. Luckily, while I was at Joann’s I found a bolt that I loved on the red clearance rack which resembled my above inspiration photo. After buying 5 ½ yards, my total came to 16.50! I was shocked. I didn’t realize it was cheaper then the red tag price. Cha ching! It was a no brainer for me.
My next step was to decide on what style I wanted...

With grommets, easy to open and close. I ruled this out due to my lack of experience with them.

Curtain rings may be a quick fix. It was my option B.

Tab tops give a more relaxed look.

I choose the pocket pole style simply because it was the easiest for me!

If you know me, you know that when I get an idea I run with it fast. Sometimes too fast. I wasted no time looking up how to sew your own curtains. With some sewing experience I just decided I was going to do it. Here’s my process. Good or bad. Professional or unprofessional. So be it!

Wash and dry fabric before measuring and sewing. (Usually I don’t do this because I don’t like waiting but I was very glad I did. I'm pretty sure the fabric shrunk.)
Oops! No worries, just cut it off.

2.       Cut 2 equal panels from fabric.

3.       Pinned the vertical sides of fabric panels with about one inch hem.

4.       Sewed the vertical sides of fabric panels.

5.       Folded the top over about 2-3 inches and pinned. I stuck my curtain rod in to make sure they fit.

6.       Sewed the top of the curtain panel (where it would hang)

7.       Repeated step 3-6 for second panel.

8.       Hung curtains without the bottom hem to see if I liked the length.

9.       Recruited The Mr. to move my curtain rod up 6 inches. Yay! Remember when I first noticed this?

10.   Rehung curtains and measured 2 inches up to sew bottom hem.

11.   Sewed the bottom hem and ironed with starch.

12.   Hung and fell in love! (Wow, I was amazed, adding 6 inches of curtain height did a lot to this room!)

I'm proud to introduce you to the new lovelies that await me every night…..
Some of you might be intimidated by my sewing but seriously any one can make curtains. Check out YHL's tutorial for no sew curtains. You can buy iron on hemming tape. It's awesome! (I used it with the lovely Brienn Darr when we recovered her chairs.) Total time spent....Eh, probably 2 1/2 hours or so. Best part...sewing machine worked like a champ! (That's not always the case!)

Things I learned about curtains:

They're pricey. Get over it!
Raise 'em up!
Ikea curtains demand hemming. (Huh, didn't know that.)
You should measure your purchased curtain panels if sold separately. They are not always the same.
Keep thread on hand. I was so thankful I could bulldoze through this project because I had just the right color thread to match the fabric.

On a more personal note, today I'm celebrating having only 17 more days of students! Wow, that went fast!
